Dr Sunpath has been head of the Clinical department of Medicine at McCord Hospital in Durban from 2002.He is a public health researcher and consultant in HIV Medicine.He qualified as a specialist physician in Family Medicine and has obtained a Maters Public Health at UKZN. He has several publications in the management of patients failing ART, HIV/TB coinfection and PLHIV who present with advanced disease. He has treated PLHIV since 1993 when working in the KZN public sector hospitals as a registrar in internal medicine. His current PhD research involves describing unique genotypic resistance mutations in subtype C –HIV infection and their impact on the choice of ART regimens in SA. He is affiliated with the academic programme at the Infectious Disease unit and Dept of Family Medicine at the Nelson R Mandela School of Medicine. Together with the Center for AIDS research at Harvard University and the HAST unit in KZN-DOH he has organised the Annual workshop of Advanced clinical care (AWACC)-AIDS being held in Durban for the last 7 years. He is the director of MEDICATE –AIDS (Medical ,Clinical & Academic Teaching) that trains health care workers for clinical and research work in KZN.
