Dr Hughes graduated with a degree in medicine and surgery (MBBCh), and Public Health (BScHons), from Cardiff University (Wales) in 2005. After two years internship training in North Wales, she completed the Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (DTMH) at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (UK). Following this she worked for two years as a medical officer in a rural district hospital in the Eastern Cape, South Africa, where she developed a particular interest in tuberculosis and also completed the Diploma in HIV Management. Dr Hughes has been working for Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) in the field of drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB) in Khayelitsha since September 2010. She is currently focusing on improving treatment regimens and access to second-line TB drugs, and decentralised management of DR-TB in primary care settings.
