Rita Thom is a general psychiatrist with diverse interests and work experience over the past 25 years in both the public and private sectors. She has a special interest in HIV psychiatry, child and adolescent psychiatry and eating disorders. She is currently the head of the South African Society of Psychiatrist’s Anti-Stigma Task team. She serves on the Human Research Ethics Committee at the University of the Witwatersrand and is an honorary Adjunct Professor in the Division of Psychiatry where she is involved in post-graduate teaching and supervision. She has an interest and involvement in policy and service development, and plays an active role in training health care practitioners at all levels within the health system. She believes that there is a critical need for strong advocacy in accessing resources for people with mental disorders.
